The events of Revelation 11 provide insight into how the King of the South of Daniel 11:40 makes preparations to support its attack on the King of the North in "the time of the end". The "time of the end" (in my understanding) is represented by the end of the 2,300-year prophecy (1844). I say this because there are many who teach that the time of the end is 1798, when the "deadly wound" was inflicted on the beast (Revelation 13:3). Given that the year is not a salvational issue, we won't discuss the details of why I believe it is 1844 (feel free to email me if interested); the point here is that the King of the South makes an attack on the King of the North in the time of the end.
This is the topical foundation for understanding who the King of the South is during the time of the end. It will be important to keep this in mind when studying Revelation 17 which reveals, through the eyes of history, exactly what power is in control now in 2009 and its influence of people's willingness to believe in and obey God.
When studying the prophetic timelines and end-time prophecies of Daniel, we see great detail pertaining to the kingdoms of Greece and Rome in chapter 11. At first glance, it appears as though the prophecies of Daniel 11 are different from those of Daniel 2, 7 & 8; the prophecies of these three chapters are all parallel with respect to them being a timeline of events from the time of Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylon through the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. However after careful study of the prophecy of Daniel 11 from the eyes of history, we see that this prophecy is also parallel to the prophecies of chapters 2, 7 & 8.
For the purposes of this study, we're going to focus on the King of the South as referenced in Daniel 11:40. The preceding events of Daniel 11 can be summarized by stating that after Alexander's ("the Great") death, his kingdom was divided. The Bible prophesied that his empire would not go to his descendants (Daniel 11:4) and after this was attempted and failed (by deception and bloodshed), the kingdom was divided under the command of four generals (Cassander, Lysimachus, Ptolemy & Seleucus). Amidst conflict amongst the four generals, Lysimachus defeated Cassander and Seleucus defeated Lysimachus which made Seleucus the first "King of the North" (Syria). Ptolemy ruled Egypt, making him the first "King of the South". The Ptolemaic Dynasty ruled until 30BC when Cleopatra VII and Mark Antony committed suicide together. The last mention of any activity from the King of the South is in Daniel 11:25-27. In verse 29, we see that the King of the North will attack the King of the South at an "appointed time". In verse 40, where we see the King of the South reappear, we see him attacking the King of the North, with the King of the North retaliating in the "time of the end". The King of the North at this point is the Papacy, but who is the King of the South (understanding that the last reference to the King of the South took place around 30BC)?
This takes us to Revelation 11 which gives us a prophetic view of the French Revolution (1789 - 1799). For a more comprehensive study on this prophecy, one must study the records of history to fully put the prophetic pieces together. For the purposes of this study, we'll look at the highlights of this chapter.
